Her flowered skirt rustles in the gentle wind, As she gazes over the ocean's twinkling blue. She anxiously awaits the return of her love, her kin, For the time of his valiant arrival is due. She stands there upon the crumbling, rocky shores, Scanning the distant horizon with a watchful eye. Her heart is hopeful as she searches for the one she adores, The greatest of men who stands by her side. Dusk rolls in like a menacing, cruel storm, And there is still no sign of welcoming sails. Her salty tears are now slowly beginning to form, But she hastily brushes them away, for he will prevail. Frosted moonbeams now caress her weary face, As twilight draws into a silent night. Her darkened silhouette is a heavenly grace, Her love for him glowing like a beacon of light. The night fades into a sunny, warming morning, But no relief is granted to a lonely wife. For still no ship arrives upon wind's gentle wing, And her tortured soul remains inflamed with anguished strife. Days turn to weeks and then weeks to years, And still his grand ship does not return. No word comes to confirm her worst fears, Nothing of him does she ever again learn. As the years creep by she slowly lets him go, And realizes its better to cherish the love that had been. She has learned that it is better to let a new life grow, Then to wait for an eternity for a ship that will never come in. ------------------ *Krista Knutson* |

Wow. Be-oot-i-ful! So sad, yet that tiny spark of hope at the end fits so well. |

Another good one.. This may sound funny but this poem reminds me of the predicament one would have with another waiting on her to notice her and then after time he moves on.. He can't wait forever.. I dunno... Beautiful poem though.. Very good job but I need to go to bed... ------------------ Micah Senter |

I can relate to this...sounds silly, but I've dated a couple of guys who were in the Navy, and I've spent my fair share of time "waiting for ships to come in...." Your poem makes it so very beautiful though...in a different light. Loved it. ------------------ - poet FemmeFatale "The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone..." Captivating..... I cannot remember how many books based on seafaring adventures I have read, but this is good indeedy. It reminded me of Odysseus.... Had I not lost that dear poem of mine, based on Odysseus, I would've shown it to you gladly. But once again, I liked your metaphor of a lost ship. |

Your poem reminds me of all the women who have waited for their husbands to come home from war. I love it. ------------------ Luv ya Kelly No doubt, this will be a night to remember. -SHeDAISY |
