my daughter called the other day
just to say goodbye.
of course, i didn't know it
at the time.

as i sit and reflect,
i remember how not
so very long ago.
she called and told me
of a man.

"oh, mama," she said, "he is
so wonderful."
i smiled to myself
thinking, "baby, this too
shall pass."

every week she would call
"mama," she would say.
"mama, he makes me
feel so special.
like i'm the only one."

then she called the other day,
and she said, "mama, i wanted
to say goodbye."
"where are you
going," i asked.

she replied with a catch
in her voice. "i don't
know mama, but it will be
somewhere nice."

"promise me, mama,"
she went on,
"don't miss me too
much while i am gone."
"k, baby," i replied, "but you know
i always do."

we talked a little longer
and then said goodbye.
why didn't i know at the
time that she really meant
goodbye?

I enjoyed this poem and I am not exactly sure why except to say I did.

The strength you have within you...what can
I say! The tears flowed...

thanks to each of you. i really can't say where this one came from except that i was somewhat melancholy when i wrote it. i don't usually write in this form.
