There will come a time, not far away,
I'll bid this earth adieu
As we all must when our time comes
To tell us our turn's through.

I'll have a lavish funeral
My family will be sad.
They'll stand around and talk about
The happy times we had.

And, at the club, my golfing pals
Will tell jokes and recall
The silly way I swung a club
Or how I hit the ball.

My kids will often think of me -
Some funny anecdote
About some foolish thing I did
Or simple poem I wrote.

Fifty years pass. All friends are gone
Most everyone I'd known.
My kids will be grandparents now
With grandkids of their own.

Yet, still, though quite infrequently,
An opportunity
May come around to give someone
A cause to think of me.

Another hundred years go by.
Now no one has survived
Who walked this earth when I did
At the time I was alive.

All stories are forgotten. Every
Thing about myself.
My life has been reduced to but
A picture on a shelf.

Another hundred years. By now
All photos are gone, too
And every house that I lived in
Plus every place I knew.

I will not have existed
And I know this well because
I had a great-great-grandpa once
But don't know who he was.

I don't know what he liked to do,
What kind of job he had.
No way to know what made him tick,
What made him smile or sad.

So that's the way it is, my friends.
It happens to us all
Who don't do something glorious
That history may recall.

And so I sit, with pen in hand,
Creating verse because
It's not to show you what I am
But to show the world I was.

...and you was GOOD!

Look at all the lives you've touched with your poetry! Someday, someone will come across a poem, printed out from the Passions Forum and wonder who you were..they'll read your words and they will know you...and remember.....

I never even knew. And because of that they
are not in my thoughts.

No children and no great works to leave,
I suspect I'll be forgotten quickly.
But for as long as I am here,
I'll remember this poem by Balladeer.

What a wonderful way to unravel... that tangle of life and death... to which we are all susceptible...it's just something we must accept...but i'll tell you this though Balladeer, long after you are gone... you'll still be the most called upon in this poetry forum....

You certainly have impacted many lives with your talent. At least, I'm one of them...you would never be forgotten though, I'd really rather not think about that prospect..you have far too many stories to tell. I intend on hearing everyone of them...so, buckle up, it's going to be a long ride.

Wow, I have always had a fear of what is going to happen after I am gone. If I'll be remembered. I can't imagine all the stuff that shall happen in the future that I won't be around to see. That bugs me sometimes when I start thinking about it. I also like to believe there is a place where we go where we will always be able to look down on our loved ones and everything that is going on, on the Earth.

As you have said dear Balladeer we all must go sometime...But have you not thought of this...Earth and I shall combine as I pass away...So you see me today...Maybe not tomorrow, but think always that you are walking on something we've all created. If it were not for our dear loved ones that we never knew...We would not exsist right now...not me my dear and not you...But I'll let you in on a little secret...Balladeer,my great fellow poet...You cannot ever be forgotten for you have got to be one of the absolute greatest

Your poem made me think of the preciousness of every second we have... but no matter what we write to be remembered, what matters more is how we live now.

I had the opportunity recently to visit the village (New Sweden, Maine) that was founded by my ancestors - and to wander about the cemetaries where my family name (Carlson) abounds... I had an overwhelming feeling of loss at not having known these intrepid folks - and a bit of SadNess in the fact that I was just now meeting a multitude of relatives whom I should have known all my life....
This is a great poem, M&M.. Thanks..

I don't know about you but I'm coming back to do it all again. And when I do I'll shout your name loud and clear. Balladeer... Balladeer... Balladeer... What was that? What did you say? Humanities evolved without any ears!

By the way. I really enjoyed this one and its a subject that I've thought about off and on. I guess its one of the reasons I've started writing as well. As always, thanks for sharing.

nice work.. thank you for sharing it with everyone..

it's quite obvious you will not be forgotten because when someone reads your words they take them with them when they go. even to heaven.

very very nice..

Balladeer,
GREAT one! The term "best" doesn't fit the occasion because each one of your poems seems to be better than the last. But this one has special appeal to me because I've lost quite a few old friends lately and I know that your words are true.

'Deer

You've caught the very essence of why I write. OK...OK...OK... I also read what I write, too. But I want to touch others and let them know that at some point in their life, they mattered to somebody. Maybe then I'll know that I mattered, too.
