The wheel, it turns from year to year,
The seasons shift and disappear.
Suns rise and set like metronome,
And time constrains all things I've known.

It took ten billion years of time
For stars to form from cosmic grime.
Another billion years or more
For life to crawl from ocean's shore.

Just sixty thousand years have passed
Since on the earth mankind trespassed,
And only five of those have shown
Society as we have known.

Two score and nine I've sought my place
In time's enduring, sweet embrace,
With quiet queries still thought of -
How long's it take to fall in love?

Is love an instant happenstance?
A quantum spark afire by chance?
A moment timed by shooting star?
One breath you're not, the next you are?

Or does it track predicted course,
All stemming from predicted source?
One step, then two, as placed in time,
A path we walk, a hill we climb?

Does love begin with newfound trust?
Or does it start as feral lust?
Should loved one first be just a friend?
And when do love's beginnings end?

If this were measured on a graph,
How could we do romantic math?
Plot time on X, and depth on Y?
What kind of curve would love inscribe?

And could we find a point in time
When trust and lust and hope combine?
When all beginnings must become
A greater whole than just their sum?

The eons thrash and ages writhe,
As Legends turn to obscure myth,
But epochs speak still nothing of
How long it takes to fall in love.

Perhaps a quantum spark of chance,
Or just a simple happenstance ~
Love's found behind a cryptic door,
Once opened thou shall quest no more.

Love does depend on mutual trust
Embodied by intrinsic lust.
The one we love must be a friend,
Or love's beginning's bound to end.

There is a time surpassed by none,
When trust and lust, as love, are one.
Clandestine dreams, entrust to each ~
The Sun shall rise within thy reach.

To fall in love does not take long.
Hearts know at once when they belong.
Seems whether near or from afar,
One beat they're not, the next they are.

AMAZING!

The very first verse drew me totally into your words. I was expecting a poem about some cosmic riddle and there it was, in the fourth verse: the poem is about THE cosmic riddle. I'm sure they are questions that anyone who has known true love has pondered over for many a long hour.

And now some words to Nan...

AMAZING TOO!

These are some of the answers, for who can ever answer all that makes up love? and you know another thing that impressed me? *cheeky grin* I didn't need a dictionary to read this one *8)

Both of these poems are marvelous!

This is my favorite:

Is love an instant happenstance?
A quantum spark afire by chance?
A moment timed by shooting star?
One breath you're not, the next you are?

A great way to question when love happens. Gosh, it's good to see you here, Ron. And Nan, was this a collaboration or a response? Either way, wonderful, just wonderful!

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words. This is a finished (sic) version of a poem that has been floating around for several months, ever since two dear people (both poets who post here) introduced me to the whole strange concept of cyber-romance. The idea of two people falling in love who hadn't met raised a lot of questions in my mind, and this was my humble attempt to ask those questions. I'm glad so many enjoyed it and, yes, I've certainly noted more than a few poems posted with answers. Whether they're the right answers or not?

And, Nan, you never cease to amaze me. That's twice now you've unexpectedly mimiced my style so closely I can't tell where I stop and you begin. Next time I want a poem, I think I'll just give you the subject and let you write it for me!

Preferably, love should start by being friends. It is a matter of balance. The most we need is hugging, a bit of loving, good talk, a feeling of togetherness, in mind and soul. Someone you can be intimate with and share a certain freeness with, someone with whom to share the laughter. And most of all respect. It takes time and caring, there is no pefection, although we can dream.
This is what I feel after having shared 47  reasonably happy years with one man. Best marty

The years pass by uncounted
but the minutes I know by name
each second since I’ve loved you
no measurement is the same

The time it took to make a star
means naught to me you see
for in that star I see the love
that I wish you had for me

The jungle beasts may be subdued
but my heart will not be tamed
I’ll not hold back a nanosecond
though to say this, I’m ashamed

My love took not a moment
to find a home in my heart
I know not when it will end
nor am I sure when it did start

In the clock held in my heart
time is measured not in space
but measured in the times I’m held
within your loving embrace

Because I'm younger
I can wait
(as long as I don't smoke too much)
Because I'm braver
I can take
the pokes and prods of "that's enough"
of ladies of agility
wishing I would go away
and stop this plague
on your birthday
(as if I'd had enough to say)
Happy, happy, birthday sweets!

Kiss me! TWICE!
I'm Gemini!
Kiss me thrice
before I die
wishing you were mine...

(forgive me. I'm just bein' naughty.)

Truly inspiring!!!!  Have often pondered the moment of love.  I believe it is when we become selfless that it happens.  Just my own opinion.  Enjoyed the read.
