Dear Passions,

How about an instant messanger so people can converse with each other when they're on-line at the same time? Like the one at:

People have things they want to say to others-suggestions and comments that they'd rather not say sometimes for everyone else to read in the forum replies.  And e-mail is so darn slow to talk back and forth in.  But an instant messager would allow poets to interact with each other, share conversation while being on-line...Does anyone else reckon an instant messanger would be a great to add at Passions??  Is it feasable???

Hey Poe...

Many of us do already talk to each other in "real" time with ICQ.  We can converse privately with another poet, or set up a community discussion at any time.

We can also choose who can "see" us online at any time.  This is the most versatile program of its type, and is widely used here on the forums.  Anyone who chooses to have their ICQ number included in their Passions Member Profile has a blue flower icon on each of their posts.

This program is also the most functional for us, as it doesn't tax Athena's bandwidth.  It's totally independent, yet works integrally for us.... It's also a free download...

"Athena" Nan? A little ahead of the gun there, or am I behind it? (which sounds a lot more dangerous than it really is...)

Not everyone has ICQ, or want to download program that takes up hardrive space, but if there were instant messanger everyone would automatically be able to talk while here. Woudn't it be more convenient for everyone?

Poeminister, any method of Instant Messaging requires software to be downloaded and run on the client machine. The best anyone could do with HTML and standard browser software would be "Almost Instant" messaging, forcing a page refresh every few seconds. That would drive ya nuts.

My teenage nephew, btw, has just about every IM out there. He tells me AOL IM sucks (his words, not mine), and MSN's version is far superior to ICQ. I think there was a fourth one (Yahoo?), but don't know where it stood in his rating system. Our software, obviously, encourages ICQ over the others, with the little flower available to tell you if someone is currently on-line. AND you can use the flower to send someone an ICQ message (albeit a darn short one), even if you don't have ICQ installed. But, frankly, I don't think many people here are using it. Instead, they just use the full ICQ program.
