i really love the Passions site and it's obvious literally thousands of others do as well, but it's also obvious that newcomers are not reading the poetry posting guidelines ... i suggest that some equitable rules be put in place to safeguard against over-posting and under-replying ... i'm sure the programming for this approach is not novel and could be invoked easily ... i suggest restricting all posters to no more than three poems per day and for each one they must have left no less than 3 replies to other posts (not including their own original posts) ... so, that means each poster must make 9 total replies to other poetry posts in order to post 3 of their own pieces ... the number is actually arbitrary, but the ratio could stay the same ... 16 replies for 4 posts ... 25 replies for 5 posts, etc. i really feel this approach may ease the congestion a bit and allow those that enjoy reading as much as posting our own works, a chance to actually read more and respond to others in a more meaningful way ... thanks for a great site and listening to this ... My calling before me, let quill be my offering; For to be called poet, no greater gift to receive. M.A. |

I agree as a fairly new person about the posting problems occuring..why doesnt the moderator email the ones doing it..first as a reminder and second that they will delete the surplus ones if it continues...I have read the guidelines and those recently reposted this week and I think they are plain and dont need new restrictions..sometimes computers are down..servers don't allow you to get on line..are you giving the replies a deadline as to how many within how many hours..I don't think that should be the case..2 poems posted in any one forum a day is enough of a rule and I find it very pleasant..and one reason I have decided to make this a new home for my poetry...the only way someone can produce that many poems as has been done recently is what is called "dumping them" out of their own archives... another idea may be a challenge lets all write a poem on the dumping of poems on the sites and eventually one of them would be read by those doing it...as for the replies..I try to reply first to those who have none...and then move on to others..to lend some support to the new poems.. Anyway..why don't we respond under the persons poems who is doing it also and make them aware that it isnt appropriate forum behavior..if no one tells them and they dont read about it what good would new rules do...I hope you understand I am just responding to your thoughts...having been on other forums that have had this problem... ~~soft hugs MA Maureen |

Ah! Thank you both for expressing your concerns so succinctly! We do email the offender with the guidelines! Sometimes they don't reply. More often than not, they reply with an apology stating they weren't aware of the guideline about multiple posts. I'll leave this topic now..some things unsaid..and we'll see what the other members say. Again, thanks for bringing up one of my pet peeves! |

As Sharon said, they are emailed about this! Most of them don't know any better. We figure if we let their poems fall with no replies naturally, they'll get the hint. |

And Poet deVine did have a poem posted about this subject in Open 8. I think I'll go find it right now--perhaps it should be moved to Open 9? Anyway, thanks for your expressions of concern, M.A. and Maureen! Elizabeth Why ME??? |

It is so pleasant to see new members take an active and supportive role in Passions guidelines. All of your suggestions, as noted above, have been implemented/used/ modified/discussed/worked/cussed... [oops] before. That YOU have picked up on them [and rapidly, I might add] is proof that the systems implemented WORK. So please know, MA and Maureen, the moderators are applauding you and your efforts to "spread the word." Thanks! < !signature--> Karilea When you want to be loved, look within...KRJ [This message has been edited by Sunshine (edited 07-31-2000).] |

When we email these people, who are posting multitudes of poems, we also suggest that they balance their originating posts with several comments to others' works. That's what makes Passions tick... We grow closer as a community, and have the opportunity to read some really good poetry at the same time... |

i see there's plenty of interest in this subject (especially from the Emeritus members) ... i'm sure you don't need to be told of similar sites popping up all over the web, but there is one in particular that has invoked a posting restriction that seems not only logical, but fair ... www.enterthemuse.com here is their posting guideline (related to number of posts only) ... Currently, you may post one poem per day in a maximum of two forums ONLY.(there are several forums, not unlike Passions). This is an attempt to prevent forum flood. If you do not comply with this rule, your most recent posts, including any comments made on them, will be deleted. You may however, make as many reply posts as you wish. As a general principle, commenting on other people's work is a good way of "getting yourself known" in the forums, and most people will be willing to comment/critique your work in return. as i stated above, you don't need me to tell you of the competition out there, but the above policy sure makes sense to me (particularly in light of some of the more troublesome server and technical difficulties that have caused the site to crash) ... thanks again for a great site and i hope i'm not making more out of this than there appears to be ... |

MA..thanks for the link. I've actually been to that site! And a couple more. And yes, they do have a 'limit'. But as I said before, usually the newbie is apologetic about multiple postings and doesn't do it again. What number is the limit for posting? Two? There are times when I'd love to post three or four! If I could...one night, months ago, I had a flash of inspiration and posted 4 in one night..not all in the same forum! It hasn't happened since sadly enough! My point is, we are a very tolerant bunch here. We cross our fingers and hope that the new members will behave. If they don't, we take a harder line. But you will notice that we have a phenomenon called the "Passionate Plummet" that occurs when someone posts too many poems at one time. We all try to reply to as many POETS as possible. If I see someone has posted 8 poems, I'll only reply to one. It's only fair. |

agreed, Poet deVine ... I must learn the ways of the "Emeritus Force" and become more tolerant, but more judicious with my replies ... thanks again for listening to my ramblings ... m.a. |
