I wondered if it would be hard to add the feature of showing how many people actually came to read a poem?  It would be wonderful to know that words were read by people even if they did not leave a comment or response.  The comments are wonderful for some, but others just like to know that their work was even read.  Just a thought for the "soon" file.

Do you mean something such as this?
http://www.geocities.com/ednewenglish/views.htm

The "views" wouldn't be accurate, but it would let you know how many clicked on the link to your poem and possibly read it

It's been discussed before, Sharon. A lot of Members said they really didn't want to know. ("If 1,000 people read the poem and didn't respond, does that mean they all hated it?")

Like the idea or hate it, however, it's not very practical with our existing software. Pages that end in .html (as do most pages in the forums) are static web pages, little more than digital sheets of paper. They can't count or keep track of things.

Should we ever get moved to new software (and converting several gigabytes of data makes that dubious), the new pages won't be static and there will be "optional" counters on just about everything. It'll be up to each individual how much information they want to see.

But the number of replies are shown on the "static" html page.  Couldn't the number of "views" be made to work just the same?

Thanks for answering Ron.  See, we think you are so darn smart you can do just about anything   and you probably can, if the software could.

You stated, ("If 1,000 people read the poem and didn't respond, does that mean they all hated it?") Hmmm, it could mean they all liked it too     Actually, I wouldn't care if they liked it or hated it, but would be grateful to see the piece read, as why else would you post a written work on a site?  First and foremost, I think we write for ourselves, or should. Critical analysis is a great forum for getting that much needed guidance and feedback.  Thanks for the answer, I appreciate it.

While I have you Ron, does it save space on the server here, doing "collective responses" to all those comments, instead of doing them one by one? There is a discussion going on about that, and would be good to hear from the "horse's mouth" so to speak.

How many replies are currently on this thread, Essorant?

You can answer that question for the same reason the software can list it, Ess; because it's a quantity that can be counted at any time. You don't have to "remember" how many replies there were so you'll know how many replies there are in the future. You just count again.  The number of times this page has been viewed, however, isn't so readily available.

Sharon, yes, collective responses save on server space. Not a lot, though, and that alone probably shouldn't be a determining factor.

Ron,

Here are some sites I know that display the number "read" or "views" alongside the replies for each thread.

Textkit.com

Ða Engliscan Gesiðas

Koinonia

Do they use a special code or software for it?
