Dear Passions Of late I've been looking at Critical Analysis a lot and trying help discover what may get it to thrive better. I was wondering if it may help to put one or two more moderators in the forum to help make sure that there is more greeting to people who come there, and that everyone gets a critique and any extra guidance he or she needs about the purpose of the forum; and generally may set more examples for members to note in some cases as well. Maybe there could be some sort of election. Just a suggestion [This message has been edited by Essorant (11-20-2003 12:18 AM).] |

Anyone who meets our simple requirements, having over 300 posts and having been a member for a few months, is welcome to apply to become a Deputy Moderator... /main/deputies.cgi - We'd love to see more folks become involved in this program. As for the CA forum itself - We're always open for suggestions...Thankya... |

quote: The only problem I can see in the above is that none of the tasks you’re expecting the new moderator(s) to undertake have anything to do with the job of being a moderator. While it’s true that some existing forum moderators do indeed welcome people and reply positively and frequently, those things are done because they want to not because they’re expected to. Moderators moderate forums – anything else they may contribute is a bonus. Which brings me nicely to my next point – Given that Moderators moderate or police the forum, why would CA need more moderators when they already outnumber the people consistently posting? I’d go even further, on occasion it seems that they are the only people consistently posting, what CA needs is more members actively and consistently posting. Half a dozen people from Open every now and then are a welcome addition, though I’ve a sneaky suspicion they only turn up to rally round and show solidarity when someone raises an issue in the Mod forums, but they hardly ever stay around. CA isn’t short of moderators it’s short of permanent and consistent contributors. As strange as it may seem I don’t think that getting people to post in CA is all that difficult, over the years there have been countless numbers of able critics and poets participating in CA . Including the people wandering in from Open, the trick isn’t getting the people in there, it’s keeping them once they’re in there. quote: I don’t think CA needs one as I’ve said but if there is some sort of election my vote would be for Rob with Hush running a very close second. |

I know in some areas moderating must be like policing; but is it supposed to be like "policing"? |

It just seems like a greeting, and guiding aspect needs to be there more in CA. If more moderators were set this would help make sure that the new members get the regard they deserve for sure, and the new members and other members would see these examples set more often to follow. Sometimes it just takes one comment to a post and it triggers many other readers who have been holding things in to comment. That is just one more thing that moderators are good sparkbringers to . quote: I think policing is a fair description of what’s required of a moderator, the things you mentioned like welcoming and critiquing are things that moderators do while wearing their PIP membership hat. In other words it’s something that any member can do if they want to, but it’s not a prerequisite of being a moderator. You say you don’t want to be a moderator and I can understand that but there’s nothing to stop you, or any other member, doing the things you suggested, I’m sure Ron and the moderators wouldn’t object. |
