As a coward I cower in my lonely room
waiting for the world to begin
afraid each day to take a misstep
Afraid to lose ‘cause I’m afraid to win

Someone asked if I’d go out on a limb
to reach the heights my spirit aspires
would I climb out there, fearlessly
to gain everything my heart desires

I look at my life, from inside out
and know of myself, I’m afraid to give,
sure that I’ll die before I get the chance
to be out on that limb and live

Would I go out on a limb you ask
no, I’ll stand down here in the shade
climbing the tree of life is too hard
and, my friend, I’m much too afraid.

DeVine,

I know how you feel...climbing the tree of life is a frightening experience...especially if you're scared of heights...and yet I've looked don to realize that I've already began to climb...so i figure why stop now, I'm already on my way up.

I enjoyed the read...thank you for sharing it.

Great extended metaphor - for sure - and an overall great work - Methinks, though, It is not of yourself you speak??

Everyone goes out on a limb as soon as leave their front door...we constantly make decisions about so many things, some of which could hurt us but likewise they could bring so much joy and life isn't really life if you close yourself off from feeling both pain or pleasure...

i.e. If I hadn't had the courage to make my first post in here, I wouldn't have met you, would I?...

Now if only I could take my own advice..

Poet deVine,
It is far better to be wise and afraid.
Then suffer the aids of an escapade.
As usual your style and form is floorless.
And with your usual luminece I must confess.

Thank you all.......I write down the phrase challeged and look at it....what does it mean to me.....and this was the answer..to an extent, it is me....but I do go out on limbs once in awhile...how else would I get those apples!
