Old Babe's Revenge

now this story I'm about to tell

ain't fiction m'friend, I know it well

it's about an ornery old nag

a bale of hay in a horse-skin bag

she whinnied and kicked and raised a fuss

she bucked, snorted and made fools of us

her apple thieving was about to end

that's the plot of this story m'friend

once when hastily through the fence I ducked

her heels firing a double-barreled buck

I'd had it I yelled, I stormed and fumed

as this plot formed, my evil revenge bloomed

'stead of an apple, her next foray

'stead a treat to last her 'til judgement day

an onion in an apple-skin guise

will pucker her lips and moist her eyes

I giggled and smirked all through the night

plotted her doom with such evil delight

the 'morrow rose with barely a squeak

and through the dim-lit barn I did sneak

up to the crib I stole so quiet

I heard Old Babe whicker near beside

soft liquid eye hides a viper's nest

I muttered, cursed, swore 'neath my breath

"Be damned! Go to hell with the rest!

Yes this will be a fight to the death!"

open palm held a shiny red orb

irresistible to man or horse

she sniffed, sneezed and gingerly bit

I smothered a laugh and an eyelid flit

waiting and watching Medusa eat

I soon took an unobtrusive retreat

slowly I backed right out the stall

inch by inch, I snuck down the long hall

when suddenly my backside did bump

on the dung heap I fell with a thump

spluttering I rose up like Phoenix

steam rolling off me in smelly drifts

upon my ears fell a horsey laugh

as I yelled "I'll kick your buckskin ass!"
