"Eve III" is the third of a trilogy about the wives (of Adam, Cain and Seth,) who were the initial women refered to in the book of Genesis. Here Seth's wife speaks. Eve III My days grow long as they are many, for each a place I keep inside a grateful heart by any standard, aware how deep the love who chose in me, ten thousand moons ago, a wife his gentleness has taught the hows and wherefores of long life. Five hundred babes I've given birth, they all are strong and well, striving hard to subdue the earth, victorious stories can tell. Too soon that day aborting play has urged them on their way. Things change as death has had its way in all the world around us now, yet we show no decay. I look the same as when he found his unpaired half, anticipating. Wrinkle free, of gray no hint, Adam , when tired of waiting, drove his spirit away, and breathed no more. Though fifty years have passed, he looks the deep he'll break as dawn returns and clears last night of restful sleep. Time will lever the soul from flesh, sunder what He'd enmesh. Remembered tales, elder brother's unshriven, stark despair, lush garden home once first mother's, enjoyed in mindless care. Then angels guarding entrance gates, the family without, must learn to till and fill their plates alone, souls tensed in doubt. Remembered too, how good it felt, filled the family larder, resolved whatever fate had dealt to work a little harder. Husband Seth's single plan, no strife, grand hopes, one wife for life. --BGvH . . . . Women of the Word Poems From the Goober Tree http://nathoo.wustl.edu/baron/women/women_main.htm |

opps... I missed this one earlier when I read the other two eves in the trilogy. This one is as beautiful as the first two and the three together are just wonderful. It was an inspired idea to put these three together. |
