Soldier on the Hill ©1999 Genea Parker

The Roman soldier stood on the hill, in the shadow of the accused man.
It had been a very long night in this town in this desert land.
The soldier had only been doing his job for which he was very well paid.
Taunting and whipping and beating the man with no one to come to his aid.

The man cried out in agony praying to his God all the while.
The Roman soldier ignored his cries and responded with an evil smile.
Many hours had passed since then; the bleeding man now nearly broken
And in his final hours of life only prayerful words were spoken.

The Roman soldier looked in his eyes and realized he’d been wrong
To beat this man throughout the night; he sinned just by going along.
He said a silent prayer of contrition, telling God of his great regret.
Just at that instant the man looked down and for a moment their eyes met.

“I’m very sorry for what I’ve done. I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
The bleeding man managed a smile for the man filled with self-pity.
“Though you beat and tortured me, I now see remorse in your eyes.
I love you and forgive you your sins.” “What have I done?” the soldier cried.

He stood watching as life drained away, from the man who’d preached three years.
How could this man forgive me, he thought. He’s truly the Messiah it appears!
“Just how much do you love me Lord? The soldier looked up and cried.
“This much my precious son.” Then he stretched out his arms and died.

Each of us is like the soldier, who turned away that day from the Lord.
But He always loves and forgives us; we can depend upon His word.
Each day of our lives we cannot forget, what the soldier learned who cried
It was for us that our Lord lived, and it was for us that He suffered and died.

I love this one, it brought tears to my eyes! You wrote it very well, especially the last line.
