Purgatorial Incarceration

Dying Rose

Like the silken petals,
of a dying rose,
tears,
stream down a reddened face.
Smears of the masque,
that once served as a shield,
trace the contours,
of swollen cheeks.
Convulsive spasms,
of heartbroken sobs,
clench and unclench.
A rapid motion,
not unlike a-
soul shaking seizure.
Gripped by harsh reality,
in an uncaring and spiteful world,
madness seems to beckon...
...as does death.
But oblivion is much crueler,
a more terrible realism,
than the agony,
of aching thoughts.
Life,
unprecious, ungiving.
It offers little of itself.
Is as selfish,
as a newborn babe.
What is gained,
from the time given,
is gained only by taking,
by seizing the warmth,
of a summer breeze-
-or embracing the love,
that once was there.

I think at one time or another, we've all hidden under a masque to shield ourselves from further pain...Most of us still wear those shells...even to bed. I'm glad this is only a memory now....
