(This poem is not necessarily my viewpoint; primarily written to present a specific perspective) EUTHANASIA Suicide of any kind is no crime, just don't ask one to hold your hand for a time. Refusing the painfully ill a means from a place of compassionate and noble team. A "good death" justified for the 'right to die'; relinquishing unbearable suffering, a limited existance, Allowing a patient to choose their distance. Our laws are confusing to me... allowing abortion, and unprecedented suicide, but not the right to die with dignity and pride? It's all right to leave this earth, before an infant has a chance at birth, to suffocate or to have meaningless suffering; our government...who do they think they're buffering? This subject mentioned in discreet silence-useless remarks, few, who have raised sparks... gained the attention even with care and discretion, of this so called dishonorable mention. There is no conflict between quality of life and conscious decisions due to strife. Giving one the option-a caring society, with the accompaniment of your selected deity. From a God who is loving and kind, understanding and forgiving, does He mind? All our life He gave us choice- why now-can't we exit with poise? ------------------ Julie ------------------------- ..."to thine own self be true." >William Shakespeare |

I relly liked the point that made......i have always believed that it is your choice to die or keep going, and i also think that Kevorkian is doing a good thing.....its not murder, he's just helping them..... |

I am a firm believer in the fact that we choose how we should live our lives it should be our choice how we end them. As a registered nurse, I have seen far too many people waste away at the hands of cancer till they are merely flesh covering bone, connected to every imaginable gadget possible, and suffering inequities we wouldn't let and anmial suffer through...all for the sake of "love"...to me that is not love. If you love me, let me die with dignity, not under stark white hospital sheets while everyone looks on and my body is subject to a thousand pokes and prods. Let me go peacefully, in the privacy of my home, with those who love me nearby, let me meet God as I left him...free of binds save for the clothes on my back. Oh...sorry, I didn't mean to go into a speach here, but that is truly how I feel. ------------------ "In the depths of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer" ~Albert Camus |

Well, don't get me started....I wrote this for my treasured cat when she died aged 23 but the poem is the way I feel about human life as well...noone should have to suffer in pain and I'm not just talking of terminal pain but emotional pain as well...I have sat and held a friend's hand and it's hard but I'd rather do that than have them die alone... If It Should Be If it should be that I grow weak And pain should stop me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done For this last battle can't be won. You will be sad, I understand Don't let your grief then stay your hand For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test. We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears You'd not want me to suffer so The time has come, please let me go. Take me where my needs they'll tend And please stay with me until the end Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see The kindness that you do for me Although my mind has had it's last thought From pain and suffering I've now been brought. Please do not grieve it must be you Who has this painful thing to do We've been so close we two these years Don't let your heart hold back the tears ------------------ You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. |

Thank you all for your comments. Hoot, I am not a nurse or in the medical field but the past couple of years I saw my father deteriate from cancer and my grandmother waste away in a nursing home. I really admire you for having so much courage to help those when our own hands are tied. I especially have great appreciation for hospice...at least we have that. ------------------ Julie ------------------------- ..."to thine own self be true." >William Shakespeare |

RainbowGirl, that was beautiful. Tears... Just because it makes us sad doesn't mean it's wrong...just means we will miss them. p.s. I do have respect for people not to make this choice, but I think it is "choice" is what we are after. ------------------ Julie ------------------------- ..."to thine own self be true." >William Shakespeare |

Julie: Thanks...I don't mind admitting I cried buckets but peace and dignity is what we all need in our final days... Thanks for caring, it's a subject close to my heart!
