They were sent out here on prison ships, From their home land of Ireland, Young Mary and her friend Polly McNamara, For petty crimes they did commit. Arriving in Australia what a strange land to behold, Then into quarantine to recouperate and rest, This Sunday free settled men would come, To choose an assistant, maid or wife so they must be at their best. Young Mary feared by whom she would be chosen, Older Polly made sure she'd get a good man, They felt like prized pigs being inspected, Only seven years each then they'd have earnt their freedom from this land. Young Mary was chosen by a Captain in the Red Coat Brigade, To be a kitchen hand, Polly was chosen by William Price a free settler, To work at the 'Bird In The Barley' a small pub where he was in command. The journey from Old Sydney Town out to the farm was long, Upon arrival there she met some fellow convicts, She was told the rules and regulations, what was expected of her, There'd be no insubordination or conflict. Polly landed on her feet as always, William Price was a fair man, He was once a convict too, So he seemed to understand. They began their 7 years of service, Wondering what their fates would be, Feeling alone and full of fear, In this strange land across the sea.
