left here from another time. The reward it once was offering, has been ground into the grime. You used to win a Lady's favor, by your verse, deeds, and by song. Now coin is what you pay her, and swear that nothing is wrong. Opening a door for a woman, was once a sign of respect. Perhaps one day it will be so again, for now, reasons are suspect. Ladies were always treated as such, their right by virtue of birth. There's nothing that I delight in as much, as showing women their worth. Honor should not bend nor ever yield, it becomes it's own reward. Upheld by the silver tongue I wield, honors limits are explored. My goal is to keep honor alive, by song, by verse, and by deed. Dream...Yanno.....(as if it weren't noticeable), I was raised in the south...I'm nearly 50 years old.....I still say "Yes Ma'am and Yes sir"...always open doors for the elderly and ladies....(or even if they're younger than I), I do call the ladies "sweetie" a bunch....or "hon".....and it's not being a flirt or anything...just something some of us "Southerners" have always done.....It's a shame respect/chivalry/courtesy etc. has gone by the wayside.....don't ya think? |

Indeed sir, I do. The greatest of shames, yet I have encountered women who take it not as respect but rather as a gentleman being condescending to them. |

I must be really, really, really old, because I believe, always have, always will, that chivalry is the ultimate form of respect, and I'm sorry that most men seem to think that the "women's lib movement" applies to all women. My only allegiance to the movement was that a woman, if doing the same job as a man, should receive the same pay. But I digress. Continue to strive, DE, and may your kind come back to sweep us all off our feet! |

Great message, delivered in a sterling package ... reminds me of a joke ... lady waits for a bus in a short, tight, leather skirt .. bus arrives ...skirt so tight she can't step up into bus, reaches back and unzips a little, still can't step up, unzips a little more, still can't get in, third time unzips a little further ... just then the man behind her lifts her into the bus ... she flies into a rage ... a stranger touched her ... gentleman replies, "nomally I'd agree, but after you unzipped my fly three times, I figured we were friends". |

Dream, I am certainly Honored to know a kind gentleman such as yourself! Because of men like you, chivalry is not dead! Toerag, I just felt the need to comment on your reply... I did not grow up in the south, but I have a lot of family that did... I have always appreciated how polite the custom is there. Children say "yes, ma'am" and "no, ma'am." I have often wondered why such a custom is not the way in the northern states. From birth, I have been teaching my children to be just this polite to others and the people they come in contact with are amazed at how polite my kids are! I am actually very young, only 17, and although I believe in the women's movement and believe that men and women are equally smart and may have equal physical strengths and are basically equally human ... but that does not mean that either sex can live without respect for one another.. chivalry shown to a women is a sign of respect and as a sign of respect to the man, it should be taken as such and not as a manner in which is though of demeaning... and so I wonder if I am so young as to not understand the lessons of respect life teaches ------------------ 823 |

Star Fairy....I would have to agree with everything you said except for the physical strength....which is not important anyhow....I taught "hand to hand combat" to special forces during Vietnam...and women are truly not as strong physically....but usually more so mentally in many situations...and, as I said, it's not important.....But my mother taught me respect.....the South thrives on that with ladies and elders....and I will always have the respect for my God, my country, my parents, women, and the elderly.....And this is NOT a thing that should be admired in one, but one that should be expected by all!!! |

Wonderfully stated DE. And know that I try to show respect, even if it is mis-intrpreted. I figure that those who are appreciative outweigh those who are offended. And besides, though I wasn't raised in the south, I too was brought up on healthy doses of ma'am and sir's(even though you told me you're not a sir!) |
