Who is this woman
Who stares back at me?
I’d call her pathetic
But my friends disagree.
Born in the country
Hick to the core
Through avid reading,
I learned there was more.
Brains but no beauty -
I didn’t fit in.
My yearning for learning
Was considered a sin.
Married too young
Knew I’d made a mistake
Within twenty-four hours.
Eight years it would take
To give up and move on…
A mostly celibate life,
Never again close
To being anyone’s wife.
No kids of my own,
Four times a godmother...
Much of life spent
Wishing mine was another.
Depression once gained
A smothering grip.
But I somehow survived
Now rejoice in each sip
Of water or wine
Or Foster’s fine beer.
Each swallow celebrates
The knowledge - I’m here!
I’m sort of an old maid
At home with my cats.
Most times I’m content
With just being that.
I’m still not inclined
To cut myself slack.
I focus on failures
And attributes I lack.
My wallet is empty,
My wealth found in friends
Who stand by me, love me
Come to my defense
From my own assessment.
In them, I am blessed.
They support, they encourage,
They’re simply the best!
My love for the Toerag
Is pretty well known.
I’m so grateful for him
For that man has shown
Me how to smile
When the going gets tough.
If I don’t deserve heaven
His friendship’s enough.
I’m daughter, I’m sister,
I’m friend and I’m aunt.
I know what I can do,
Accept what I can’t.
I can’t say that I always
Like what I see
When I look in the mirror
But hey... that’s just me!

suthern this is excellant. You have captured you, and very well too, I just love this! your honesty and your caring comes out so clear, and yes you are too hard on yourself, but hey, that's why you have us huh? so we can lift you up!

and you were braver than me, you did it in first person *s*

You might not always like what you see, Suthern, but we do! Hugs!

Toerag: My opinion of you would be absolutely accurate if my vocabulary was only extensive enough to adequately describe how wonderful you are!!! *G* I hope you like the poem, sweets... my pen had been dry for years before your encouragement filled the cartridge... thank you!

Lovey and Elizabeth: Thank you!!! (I'm glad to see you backed off THAT ditto, Lovey... we can't have an O&O dittoing that my opinion might be in error! LOL)

well as it is officially a nonditto anyway I needn't take it back, but what I meant was that I didn't ditto toe's opinion that your opinion of him was just an opinion....I mean after all, I am the next in line....*g*

got that opinion stuff all straightened out now? *eg*

great poem girl, I love it!

I liked this very much. An honest look at yourself, except for leaving out that you are a great lady and wonderful poet! Sometimes we are our harshest critics...and all for naught - we accept you for what/who you are.

dsnyder, PDV, RG & JTF: Thanks for your kind comments on the poem and its subject! *G*

Blondie: I honestly didn't think I could write "on command" and was going to hide and just enjoy the other poems from your challenge.... but I took a walk and the words started nagging... thanks for pushing me!!! (And I'm a Mother Hen... does that count? LOL)

Suthern you have done a great job! We are our own worst critics. Didn't mean to copy from above but she's right! I'm glad it nagged you so we could get to know you! Thanks for sharing!!!

hmmmm.... did anybody else notice that not once did Belle say she was a blonde??? She's said it lots of other places, though. I think she's a BOTTLE BLONDE. Yeah! That's it! As for the poem. Very nicely written, Belle. Its a privilege knowing you.

I agree with Toerag; you are a class act, my friend.  What a lovely lady to know.

I am so happy that you remain here.
