The Fix

"We had left very early, and James Jones was driving
so fast I thought he was trying to beat the sunrise."

I remember driving down a country road that was
between Verdun and Nancy; we had disengaged the
governors on the engines of the 2 1/2 ton trucks
so we could drive full throttle as we took the
trucks from Verdun to Nancy to the 3rd echelon
maintenance repair shop in Nancy where they replace
engines and transmissions and where we thought we
were leaving them to be repaired.  It was James
Jones idea to disengage the governors and now we
were traveling at top speed on a narrow country
road, lined with giant trees on each side of the
road and me thinking it would not be a good thing
if one of us had a flat or lost control in the
presence of those trees.  We got to Nancy what
seemed to be pretty fast and that gave us plenty
of time in the maintenance shop to help change
out engines and transmissions and even enough time
to film some mechanical training films showing how
to work on engines.   Both a surprising and an
interesting experience since Capt. Bohannon had only
told us information that had led us to believe we
were dropping off the trucks for repair; he had
never told us we were the drivers and the fixers.

"I wrote about this character before; this is the
James Jones that used to tell me he was GGG, that
is "Gods Gift to Girls", and he was pretty good
with the girls."

He may have thought it for himself, but this would be for the girls to say.
