The Room In the Back of the Chinese Laundry (In the Early Evenings) In the beginning it wasn't so, but after Sunday night became the norm, Su started coming to my room on other nights, either with the permission of her mother or in the presence of her mother, she would tap on my door shortly after dinner and one of the things she enjoyed was telling me stories about her childhood in China; when she was about seven, her family and other families in her village were forced to move to allow for a Government mandated expansion of a river project, in the beginning no one wanted to move because most had lived in that area for generations, but after the Chinese Government had build them a new village at a higher elevation, that was still close to the river, the villages reluctance changed to cooperation, it was during these story telling times when I would massage Su's neck and back to relax her after a long day of work in the laundry, as these moment passed we were becoming more and more attached to each other and the closer we got we wanted to spend even more time together, of course the Mom was close by to make sure we were well behaved and respectful of each other and of them, but I could sense that the Mom was more comfortable with us being together, on occasion she would laugh and smile and tease and I was starting to feel like I was becoming a part of the family.
