I am walking down the street. I am young and life is full of promise. From one of the windows of the houses I am passing a pretty young girl beckons to me. I walk over to the door of the house and knock. Nobody answers. I wait for a while and then continue my journey. This happens many times and finally I just stop going up to the houses when girls call to me. Many years pass. Then one day as I am walking past a house and I see the face of an angel. She is smiling at me and she has the loveliest eyes. She beckons to me and I notice that the door is open. I go up to the door and tap on the door jam, I am very excited, then I knock and I wait. After a while I become tired. I lay down on the front porch and fall asleep. It is cold and I am uncomfortable so I don't sleep very well. In the morning I get up walk back out to the street and continue my journey. I look back at the house a few times as it fades out of view but I never forget that lovely face and that beautiful smile. Rick, Many of us dream the dream of a figure that is our angel in disguise, yet we might never meet them. I think you met yours, but she is still in your future. |

I loved the "been there done that" mentality as it is reversed in this vignette. Where once there were only women beckoning from houses -- your symbol for the many fruitless distractions of modern life perhaps? -- there now is an angel. But the vignette ends with a sad and perhaps ironic twist. The protagonist can't seem to stop walking away. Life's short. Think hard! |
