It was the day of my daughter’s wedding, and here I was sitting on an old, lumpy couch with a rusty twenty-two in my hand. I’m not too sure what’s going on in the world and why I’m doing this, but I just want it all to stop. It’s been two years since my wife and I separated. She got everything, from our daughter and son, to the car and the house, all because of her god-damned rich parents. Her parents were so happy- they never did like me. That day, I had left the house with twenty dollars in my pocket and my head hung low. Ever since then, everything’s been against me… I placed the gun on the cheap, chestnut table beside my bed and took out my pocket sized notebook and thumbed through it. I’d found it on the ground roughly a year ago and thought it might come in handy. It had. I thumbed through it and looked at all the things I had written in it. “Typhoon Rips Through Cemetery- Hundreds Dead”… “Blind Woman Gets Kidney from Dad She Hasn’t Seen in Years”… just to name a few. So far, my favorite one was “Psychics Predict World Didn’t End Yesterday”- proves just how stupid some people can be. I put the notebook back in my pocket, took the gun and headed out the door. I thought I’d at least see a beautiful sunrise before I die. I strolled around on the road while I waited. It didn’t bother me that a car could be coming any moment. I was just walking in no obvious direction when I came across a newspaper. Picking it up, I thought I might be able to finish the notebook with a last headline before I die. I glanced through the paper looking at all the headlines. Shootings, arrests, politics, sports… nothing interesting. I went through a second time, looking for something interesting when a certain article caught my eye. It was titled: Suicide Toll Rises Yet Again Police found the body of a young woman in her early twenties yesterday, boosting the total suicide toll to 83 people this year. Nicole Allison, whose daughter is fighting for her life against cancer, quoted- “It’s a shame that so many people don’t know the value of life…” There was a picture of the victim there. It was a girl in her early twenties with blond hair and blue eyes. She almost perfectly resembled my daughter… the gun fell from my hand with a bang… this couldn’t be true… that was it… no, it just can’t be… R.D |
