SUNDAY BEST

Must be Sunday, I remember thinking.  People were all dressed up and they
were carrying dishes of food and drinks into the house of the new family on
the block.  It had to be Sunday. Sunday's the only day I know that adults
dress up.

Church going day.

"He died, you know," Susan said walking up to me.

"Who died?"

"That little boy's daddy."

"What is died?"

"Not sure, but Mom say's it means he went away. He went to Heaven to be with
God."

"Oh," I said contemplatively. That explained the clothes they were wearing.
Adults always dressed up when they went to God's house. "So is it Sunday?" I
asked.

"No.  I think it's just something adults do when someone goes to see God."

"I didn't know they went to see God except for Sunday's."

"Me neither.  But I know it's not Sunday because I would be in Sunday
School."

"Yeah, I know. Me too. But I've never seen adults dress up like that except
on Sunday."

We watched people drive up, park, get out of their cars, knock on the front
door of the house, be hugged and disappear as the door was closed behind
them. "I don't ever want to grow up," I said. "I don't think I'll ever
understand adults, so I don't ever want to be one."

"Me either," she said looking up at her mother's call. "And I don't ever
want to die if it means you have to dress up like that when it's not even
Sunday."

"I know," I answered, waving goodbye to her. "Guess I'll head down and see if the new kid can play."

This is so cute...
and I've got to agree with sea here. I was smiling and yet touched at the same time. Very innocent, made me wish to be a young child again. You do well stepping into this place.

Always, Alyssa

Enjoyed muchly!

The innocence of children - and that protective simplicity of thought - it seems so much easier to be a child - I enjoyed this
