Almost choking on her tongue, Mary Lou was very startled by Bill’s voice.  Not
expecting to hear much from her sleeping lover other than the soft inhalation and
exhalation of Bill’s breath.  She whisked the blanket off of her feet and moved
hurriedly to Bill’s side.  Her eyes misty, she gently wiped a tear from them.  Bill
smiled the most pitiful but heartfelt smile that he could muster.  His lips parched,
in need of water, a dry tongue struggling to form the simple word “water”.  She
saw his struggles, a slight giggle escaping her lips.  Reaching toward the bedside
stand, pouring Bill a small amount of water...this would certainly quench his
thirst and perhaps loosen up his vocal cords that he might be able to speak, even
if only briefly.

Struggling to speak, tears welling in his own eyes, Bill reached out his shaking hand toward
Mary Lou.  Taking his hand, holding  softly, the warmth of him flowing through
her fingers, she repeatedly stroked his palm with her thumb.  This gesture
of kindness, so simply done, drew them closer together.

Mary Lou told Bill of their escape from the vehicle, of the prompt and professional
care given by the EMT before Bill was taken away within the ambulance.  She
mentioned to him his brief smile as he lay there on the stretcher, just prior to the
door quietly closing, obscuring his view of her.  She did not want Bill to see
her prior to leaving the accident scene, vanity and a woman’s sacred looks were
far more important to her than ever to him...

She told Bill what she knew from the Doctor, extremely good news considering
the devastation that had taken place....Bill would not want to see the remains of
what was a perfectly good Sport Utility....Now a total wreck....but that was not
an issue to worry over.  Mary Lou had already contacted her insurance agent and
the details were being worked out.  She had been given a week’s rental of
another vehicle....and this would suffice until things were back in order at Bill’s
home....a home becoming more each day one which would be shared by two,
not one....Could he stand the efforts of a woman within his small but pleasurable
sanctuary?  Time would tell, yes, time would tell.

Bill asked her if she had notified the children as of yet.  Mary Lou stated that she
had and that her son would be arriving tomorrow to help with things until Bill
was able to take care of his own affairs...  The State Police officer, Sargent
Lucas, had stopped by during the morning, wanting to see if they were okay.
He informed Mary Lou that no citation would be issued, being that the accident
more than likely could not have been avoided.  Bill was a cautious driver and
this act of God certainly could not have been adequately foreseen to have
prevented it from happening....

They continued talking of light and easy things for a few minutes until Mary Lou
noticed the tiredness that she saw with Bill’s eyes.  Noticing this, she took the
reins and informed Bill that he should get some rest now.  That she would be
there at his side through the evening.....Bill, rather modest, objected to this
pampering and attention that he was getting.  However, he soon was reaffirmed
in the opinion that a woman will get her way, at all cost.  Knowing this, he
accepted her suggestion, though continuing to feign resistance toward it.  He
knew his rest was very important....Lying there,   his lids very heavy, Bill
lulled into a light sleep, as a dream returned to him...one that had come to
him on several occasions....He would remember this dream,   for within it
were many revelations which might or might not become a part of his, of
their reality....Time, would the bearer be of this.... He fought to remember
this dream.....one he must discuss...
