Old Man Samuel Prologue

“Many an unsuspecting traveler gets trapped in the pass during winter months. Their
unprepared and tired, and that makes a man careless. He thinks he can make it through,
but there're never found until the middle of spring or not at all. Respect those Blue
Mountains your life may depend on it.”
Author Unknown.

It is early morning, in Blue Mountain Pass, the clouds are dark and moving fast, the wind
is bitter and icy cold. Winter in this pass is beginning to set in, and many a traveler has
lost his way in these mountains, for the snow and sleet is blinding to the weary traveler.
You can loose all sense of direction. You are so cold unable to move, unable to make
shelter, you lie down for just a little while, so cold, so tired.
“Oh ! Jamie what are we
going to do the storm is getting worse?” “Don’t worry Grace Marie you just keep the kids
inside the wagon we’ll make it.” “But Jamie we can’t see and it is so bitter cold. Maybe
we should turn back and wait until spring. We could make shelter for the winter, we have
plenty of supplies to hold us over. We’re not that far into the pass that we cannot turn
around . Please Jamie!” “No! Grace Marie I said we can make it. Now come on you
mules pull I said pull.” “Jamie! Jamie!” Grace yells above the howling wind and snow.
The wagon slides and begins to turn over. “Jamie!” “Grace, Grace! Jump, jump!” As
Jamie yells in fright jumping from the wagon into the freezing snow.  No one to hear the
whimper of the small child within the overturned wagon, no one.  The only sound you
hear is the howling wind and the spinning of the old wagon wheel. Then absolute silence.
Winter is now in the Blue Mountain Pass and no one will be coming through this pass
until spring.

Such terribly tough times were those endured
by many as their journey took them further
into a territory never seen by their eyes...

Guts...lots of guts
