The knock...so out of place there.   For Bill had few
visitors.  The McCalls would call occasionally, but
few others ever stopped by.  Working alone, a poet
by emotion, a writer by trade...Bill spent most of
his time in thought.  Time did not allow many
visitors to this abode where words soared through
the warm cottage air.

Rushing hurriedly to the door, pulling it open...
Somewhat disappointed to find the Fedex package
sitting on the porch...another manuscript being
returned....was it accepted?  Or...was this yet
another one of those accepted rejections, for they
far outnumbered those that became published.

Afraid to leave just yet,   but knowing that
certain errands must be run, Bill hesitantly
scurries out the door, destination a small town
on the edge of earth’s horizon...Calamity....
An odd name for such a tranquil setting,
for things moved very slowly there....this
place where everyone was a neighbor and
Mrs Peabody knew everything.  Gossip
flourished where the bustle and hustle took
a back seat to porches and RC cola...

Seventy miles an hour, the front end of
a truck past it’s prime dancing like a
school girl’s rear....Bill headed west
toward town.....Headlights could be
seen miles away  in the darkness which
fell silently upon a sparse landscape....

Uneventful, this trip to Calamity, as had
been the last hundred or so over the past
twenty years.  Bill always thought that he
could just set a brick on the gas and let
the truck do the rest....

Was she married?  The thought just
jumped out of his mind, peaking his
curiosity.  If only he had stayed....

Groceries, gas, a few reams of paper.
A copy of the nearest metropolitan
paper....he so enjoyed the editorials.
How tall are they?  Wondering about
the children...certainly adults now.
When is their birthday?  He knew
they shared that....easier on candles
and cake....chuckling at the thought.

Something odd caught his attention
as he walked through the country
store....the smell of a perfume that
Mary Lou had always worn.  Surely,
fate would not have brought them
both there?  Bill stopped, walked
from aisle to aisle, slowly looking,
hesitating long enough to ensure
a blind spot was covered...Then...
standing with her back turned...
It was the legs...no one had those
legs but Mary Lou.....

Heart jack hammering away within
the screaming walls of his chest, he
walked hesitantly down the aisle...
until he was behind her....

“Mary Lou?”....   Raising her head
slightly, she turned....their eyes met...
They knew....time momentarily stood
still....as years washed away and two
young lovers met once again....

Barry...
You must write in the overhead fan if you are intending this much intensity...
I believe you might have the makings of a best seller my friend. TD
