Between the Lines

Recalling that first day of eyes begging to know more about her, he gathered her up, swung her off her feet and then holding her hand, raced with her to the top of the hill near the outdoor pool. There in front of them was a children's swingset. She was led to it, sat down and he began to push her higher and higher until she squealed in laughter, fear of heights adding to the thrill of the moment.

From up above the rest of the grounds they could see someone walking up the many steps and he whispered to her " let's go" and took her hand and ran down the opposite direction, later on explaining that this other woman was his girlfriend, or at least wanted to be.

Alice, glanced at the young woman's direction to see who it was and later on found out that she was a Playboy Bunny in Baltimore. It was hard for her to figure out why then was he attracted to Alice instead.  Despite those feelings of wonderment, she smiled to herself feeling very special at that moment. At the bottom of the hill, they both laughed breathlessly.

Later Dave introduced her to all the other workers at the pool. They were a very close knit group, who late at night, after the pool would close, would go swimming in the thirty foot deep quarry. Alice had never learned to swim, but could keep her head above water by doing an underwater breast stroke and moving her legs in a frog-like manner.

She had never gone into the quarry. Others would swing on the Tarzan ropes or even jump off the cliffs. But she would never be that brave. She would walk down the hundred foot catwalk, slim and confident of her body and would sunbathe, always keeping an eye on her favorite lifeguard, quick to get him a drink if thirsty or some fruit or whatever he would desire in the summer heat.

One day on a break, Dave told her to walk down the catwalk, and slip into the water and hold onto his back. He would take her for a swim in those murky waters. She felt the seaweed grasses wrap around her feet and imagined that they might be water snakes. She held onto him for dear life and promised herself that she would soon take some swimming lessons so she could be in front of him, catching him looking at her, when he was on guard duty.

That time came sooner than she had hoped, as the next night they all went to the outdoor pool after work and someone lifted her up, clothes and all, and then they were both pushed into the twelve foot deep end.  Panic took over and all Alice could see was her short life passing before her, just like she was told would happen to those in terror situations. She struggled to paddle over to the pool's side and then coughed up some water, held back the tears and knew that the time had come for her to take those lessons if she wanted to hang around with this group of friends.

Besides, she wanted to be able to swim across the quarry and back, proving that she could pass the swim test and be allowed there any time, especially when Dave was on duty.
