There she was, waiting night after night
for his return. Not understanding his need to drink,
but tired of confrontations.

Why, if he felt a loss of love for her,
couldn't he be honest enough to set her free
before all the pain and sorrow was cast upon her,
before lies covered her in shame and before fear
entered and filled that space in her heart.

It was no different than a death. In fact it was worse than death,
For in death, he would no longer be seen, except in memory
and worn picture frames.

She could hold in her hand what was left of him,
a ring, the diamond that sealed their love. One she had him trade in
for smaller, because her dainty fingers did not need to gloat
a love that had been defined by time as infinite... until now.

Even while entering these thoughts into her journal,
she could not stop the pounding of her heart. Each beat
a measure of time, a first love, what some would say
happens only once in a lifetime.

She had everything she needed, not rich by any standards,
except for his love.

Who would have thought he would tire of her, enough to walk out one night,
leaving behind a note that said,
"I love her and she loves me, and we can't stand to be apart."

And below that in bright red ink one last message saying,
"I'll never abandon you ever."

And he was gone....

"Love is not blind - It sees more and not less, but because it sees more, it is willing to see less."
(Will Moss)

yet he did
Oh, how this one aches of a loss that seems impossible to understand the how and why of it.
We should try to write something together some day Maureen, as I often feel I've had similar love/loss relationships and understand the same hurts, cried the same tears...you know, there is a sort of universality to these emotions, at least from a female POV. But I enjoy your writing style in this format better than my own! So I'm quite happy for the time being to plod along and see where my 'sighed' story takes me, as I haven't even written a middle or an ending yet.

well, this will be an easy write for me since it is real...beginning with the ending of my marriage and the story of my life and what was once a wonderful love, that I will probably never see or feel again, since most men by my age, no longer want a committed relationship in its totality.

Maybe it is universal, but for some reason I feel all alone in its wake.
