The VCR makes a whirring noise as it sucks in the videocassette. She flicks off the lights and settles into the comfy, old, tattered couch. She bought the couch at a second-hand store and it seemed to match her new apartment just right. The walls were yellowing where the wallpaper had come un-glued and the carpet was so...disgustingly ugly. She had finally saved enough money from her job at Ken's Grill to rent out an apartment. It was nice to get away from the dorms. She was sick of living with someone. She just needed to be alone for awhile. Maybe her boyfriend had caught that vibe, because he was gone now. She really didn't mean to push him away, but now that she was single, she didn't notice the loneliness.  In fact, she welcomed it.
The movie previews had finally ended and her favorite flick of all time had begun. She had seen it for the first time on a date with a guy she had been friends with since the first grade. She remembered her palms sweating  copiously. She had tried to tried to position her right hand on her leg to ensure easy access for her date if he ever felt the need to hold her hand. However, she kept fidgeting and rubbing her palms over her pants, which made them sweat even more profusely. He never did hold her hand. And the movie made things between them even more awkward, if that was at all possible. After he dropped her off at her house, he sped away...and then just kept running until he ran away from their relationship and she had lost a friend.
Ever since, she had watched the movie almost routinely. Yet, she never got tired of hearing the character's philosophies on friends and love. Her last boyfriend never made her think. He never questioned her about her life ideals, never wondered what made her tick, never made her question herself. She thought that she would've felt so alone without him, but she felt more like she had wasted two years of her life on him. But that wasn't really true. He didn't question her philosophies, so she began to question herself until she realized he wasn't what she needed or wanted. She wanted to be with someone who not only loved her as a woman, but also as a friend. Like I said, she isn't lonely, but she starts to cry. She feels like her wish will never come true and she lives each day and works each relationship around the philosophies of When Harry Met Sally

"Do not marry the one that you can live with. Marry the one you cannot live without."
