Does Tanka always have to be 31 syllables, or can it have less like haiku can have less than 17?

Hey Poe...

I'm sure the answer to your question depends upon whether you're a traditionalist or a liberalist...  ... Politics in Poetry.. Dontcha just love it??

There are traditional schools of thought that don't deviate from the standard in any formatted poetry, be they haiku, sonnets, pantoums, villanelles, or whatevers...

Then there are the liberalists who claim 'poetic license' to give their nonconforming work a categorically conforming name....

Um... Your guess is as good as mine???...
