not at all clear about standards or hoop-jumping to qualify for a trial membership, ao I will intro myself. Am fifty, homo, have only been writing since Oct.  Have no formal edu beyond HS.

A few months ago, a 20 year old female poet acquaintance was glumly ruminating at "chatter" about how evil "dudes' are.

I called this reaction item

"Sara is sad"
girls are pink and boys are blue

boys make girls feel blue

girls cannot make boys think pink

boys do not understand why they made girls blue

girls sink pinkly into morning dews

boys deny melancholy and speak of blue skies

girls look up then and see only gray

boys say tomorrow- hey! it's another day!

girls reply- yeah.... another gray same like yesterday

boys next go surfing to escape the wet

girls pinkly crash their waves of tears alone,
stranded behind their sea walls
boys laugh and surf their blue waves unawares

O kayyyy... but I don't get it: why does a busy site like this confuse every potential new member into either:

-giving up and moving on

-or making a fool of himself in public like I just did?

(I feel kinda silly)

Why not state "membership may be arranged by contacting an admin team member"   Why the bogus message in response to the trojan horse "register here"?

????  silly me!

Might post that in the "suggestions box" once you're a member.  By the way, you don't have to dazzle us with your mad skills here---this is a prose forum, so you can communicate in normal speech without resorting to wacky line breaks and parenthetical statements.

Local, I already noted that I'd made myself a fool by not understanding the odd -arm distancing- here in the registration process

the odd breaks "re id wel ch" are not to be odd: I explained pretty well that this is so that google's search engines won't pick up my real name and screen name "netsky" in any general search. I don't operate secretly, nor entirely foolishly all the time.

-perspective: when some newbie finds a site it is always a confusing thing as to: format, what and who is allowed. and all is -confusing and uncertain. I'll just hang and watch out here to see whether I even think I might fit into this board.  It looks interesting.  but... are newbies really welcome?  I cannot yet tell.

thanks

see, the two points?

-Local, not only is your reception a put-down, but you state "-this is a prose forum"

And I do find that a bit more confusion in thinking than I am interested in following through.  I just look at the top of this page, and at the facing page "passions in poetry"

so there I am: lost in space again.

grins and goodbye

Netsky, I believe Local Parasite was referring to the Questions and Answers (Q & A) forum when he said "prose forum" Not the whole site

A fair question deserves a fair answer.

When registrations are enabled, it's not at all unusual to see ten or twenty visitors sign up every day. Half of those -- or more -- will never read our rules or even bother to read in the forums, with the inevitable result that several will post work that is inappropriate to this site. It's just not what we want to read, or, in many cases, it's just not something we want to promote. Every one of those inappropriate posts, unfortunately, will consume an hour or more of discussion in the back rooms, as we try to fairly decide what should be done.

Search for poetry forums at Google and pipTalk will usually come up in the top three. Additionally, the main site will usually come up in the top five for that phrase, and of course, the main site leads a lot of people back to pipTalk. In fact, with over two million visitors in March, the main site leads a WHOLE LOT of people to the forums.

If these forums were less busy, we could handle a few new registrations a week. Half of those would still cause problems, but it would obviously be a much smaller half. For a lot of different reasons, however, we are ill prepared right now to handle anything but very moderate growth. Our software is nearly six years old and lacks features we need if we are to grow larger. Our staff of volunteer Moderators, though dedicated and capable, is too small. I decided, well over a year ago now, to turn off registrations because I think we all prefer quality over quantity. I know that can't last forever, because without new blood to help stimulate us, we are in danger of stagnation. Right now, however, I still think it is the lesser danger.

We have accepted a large handful of registrations in the past year, processed by one of our Admins and usually as a recommendation from a trusted Member. That's cool. It's a growth rate we can handle, especially since recommendations generally bring fewer problem posters. Beyond that, I don't care if someone gives up and moves on when faced with disabled registrations and, frankly, someone afraid of potentially making a fool of themselves in public probably doesn't belong here any way. That's a fear no writer can afford to long harbor. Those willing to ask will rarely be told no. Those unwilling to ask just make it easier to control our growth. The very LAST thing I would want to do is tell several thousand visitors a day to email one of our Admins!

Our new server is waiting for us, and indeed, within the next few weeks I'll start moving our netpoets.net domain over to Athena (hint, hint, time to backup your data, guys). Our new software is still far from being completed, but it continues to progress, and I suspect I'll introduce our Admins to our first working prototype before my lilacs have faded this Spring. That will still be just the first step on a very long road, however. We'll get there. But it won't be tomorrow and it won't ever be at the cost of the quality built by everyone here over the past six years.

A very fine and satisfying reply to my question.

And thanks to Local for letting me off my own fool hook.

OK.. So I am bold and quirky but not really so hard to live with. I do OK at Poetry Connection.

I'd like to improve my commentary skills (they are poor).  I'd like to get tough crits on my nascent poetry.  I am not at all tutored or experienced.  But I do write items  which run off the beaten path.  Maybe because I waited until age fifty to try?  Don't know.

But I would like to join this place, and run up a trial pomem or two early on, plus do a lot of commentary work for neglected poets who may be even weaker writers than myself.

And -I am eager to get harsh, realistic crits from the old hands here-

humor is my main interest.. my poetry, I mean... I do like to joke with some/much of it.  Quirky.

Thanks, sirs, for the helpful explanation.  That could be made a sticky or something for the short term, at least.  I think that the internet is full of poetry forums.  But most are so gooshy/sweet to their poets as to be of no interest to my aims.

On the other hand, there is a forum or two (nameless here) that are so immoderately run as to be virtual havens for sadists.. publicly baiting and excoriating the hapless who join into their so-called "free for all"

(some double entendre, that!)  But this place is not such a place or I would not have persisted in asking questions by which to join up when/if that is allowed.

in good spirits and with good regards for all here,
reid

You'll do OK.  The standards for responding to one another's poetry aren't all that high around here (which is a double-edged sword, of course), but there's this lovely feature called a "critique flag" that allows you to tip someone off as to exactly what kind of response you're looking for.  It shows up just above the text box when someone decides to reply to your poem, and it's a good guideline for making sure you get the response you want.

As long as you actually read some of the poetry shared by our members, and respond with enough articulation in order to demonstrate that you have, in fact, read the person's poem, and have some sort of response that you'd like to share, your presence will be welcomed by all.  You might even prefer to establish yourself through commenting for a few days or so before actually making a first post of your own, just to make sure it doesn't end up buried beneath all the others.

Enjoy piptalk!  Nice having you aboard.

Brian

Hey.  Thank you all.

I'm logged in now.  What I'll do:  mess up for sure

Think I'll go ahead and format the muffed pink/blue cliche-word poem into the general forum (to learn the html commands)

I'll get that up and go right to work commenting on general poems, which will knock my little fluffer down the list...

(quirky me!)

much obliged to you guys- to all of you here and you who wrote to me off line: thank you so very much.

Welcome Netsky... Take your shoes off and enjoy your stay here.  With you being quicky and the rest of the poets being quicky I'm sure that you will have a good time.. *Don't tell them I told you this, but watch out for Ron, Nan, Balladeer, Toerag, and PdV they are the quirkiest.* <--They know I love them.

Anyway, have a good time and see you more out on the boards soon.
