Reflections has same cover as another book? |

In searching for some good Christian poetry I stumbled across some books on a website. One of the books by an individual poet has the exact same cover as is shown for "Reflections". Is this legal? I am only curious and am not being negative in any way. There are a lot of us poets that are also artists who also take the art of a book very seriously. Maybe somebody can enlighten me. Found it at this website - http://www.christianpoetry.org/Massengill.html - just curious. He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. The proposed cover was one suggested by our rep at the printers, based on the name of the book. I was under the impression it was one their people had designed and not used? Guess I'll be making a phone call tomorrow. Thanks for the heads-up, Tim. |

Oh dear, that's a I guess. Maybe we should design our own cover, I think there are lots of good designers among us. Here's one of mine and I have lots of nice pics lying around. Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

Sorry Ron, I hate being the bearer of bad news. I hope it gets worked out. I have done a little graphic work and am an artist myself .. maybe you should have a contest...and take votes like with the poetry. I truly believe we all trust you Ron, and I hope you don't think I was being critical in any way. Good luck with it. Thanks - Tim ps - by the way - there has been so much talk about people not filling out thier information correctly or fully, it has gotten me sort of paranoid. Is there any way we may know for sure we have it all covered? He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. Proverbs 28:26 |

To be honest, I'm relieved that's not going to be the cover of Reflections. I didn't really like it to begin with. Love Titia's second suggestion. That would be really nice. Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world. |

quote: The final page of the book forms is a checklist of what has (and hasn't) been done. To change to a custom cover, as beautiful as Titia's both are, isn't feasible for a short-run book. I haven't done the exact numbers, but we would probably have to sell at least 2,000 books to justify the expense (about $1,500 setup and then 1.25 per printed book) and time (getting the negative, shooting the plates, etc., would add another month or two to our schedule). |

hmmm .. so what's the answer to the cover issue? I really hope that I haven't caused a problem. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut. - Tim He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. Proverbs 28:26 |

Seems the publisher of our book is trying to pull a fast one. My suggestion would be to make them cover the cost of getting another design. I vote for Titia's second suggestion also. It's just spectacular! Marti |

quote: Next week, it would have been a BIG problem, Tim, but right now it's just a detail that needs to be addressed. I have a call placed to the printer, but it may take hours or days for us to connect. Doesn't matter. Your link pretty much tells the whole story. The design I selected isn't as "new" as I was led to believe. All of our short-run books use stock covers. The printer runs off maybe 50K at a time, which is the only thing that makes it reasonably economical. When I order our books, they'll take 500 of the selected covers and run them through the presses a second time, adding the Title and other wording. They'll actually get run through a third time, to print the bar code and ISBN on the inside cover. Four-color presses are incredibly expensive and using stock that has been printed in bulk is the only thing that makes it possible for us to have a full-color cover. Otherwise, like most short-run books of poetry, we would be limited to a monochrome cover. The problem you uncovered (and I should have realized earlier) was that this particular cover is VERY recognizable. Both Voices and Visions used stock covers, too. But the printing added to the covers made them look unique and different and even if you ran across another book with the same stock, it wouldn't really stand out so much. Obviously, that is NOT true with the Reflections cover. I'm honestly glad that was revealed now, rather than waiting until the books were printed! The short answer is that I have to select a new stock and design a new cover. That will delay our manuscript submission maybe a week, but in the long run will be the best course. quote: I assure you, Marti, that netpoets.com (which is our publisher and pretty much just me) isn't trying to pull anything. I'm hoping our rep at the printers was simply mistaken about how new the design was. |

So, is this one going to match Visions and Voices? |

Don't know yet. When I talk to the printer, I'll have him fax me some of the more recent designs available. Until I see those, I won't know which direction to go. |

Well Ron, sounds like you have it under control as I expected you would. Personally the cover I thought was a little gaudy anyway..(just my opinion) After all it is what's inside that is important. Something a little more abstract would be cool.. or something to do with a reflection.. like in a pool of water. Anyway - I am anxious as much as others, but can wait as long as it takes to produce the best possible book. Glad to see you on it. I know it's expensive Ron, I was just having a bit of fun. You'll find another cover at the printer that will be suitable for our book. Have a nice weekend, Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |
