Diver’s Release
Robin Laffan

Music, beer, confusion, smoke
the meat of the lads at heart
in the night where energy burns
wild and furious
releasing the patience of the day.

A dark night
Freedom to be
And the world is so far away

Melancholy slips through the street of the party
a welcome guest in a stranger’s house
as each turns inwards to see the visitor.
The music’s tone is downbeat and slow,
a gentle guitar weeping sea-salt tears
in the rhythm required to watch a lone fish
for a solitary hour,
barely breathing in the amniotic blue
while hovering over a garden of coral.

“Play something ****ing cheerful!”

And the party is reborn in the star lit night
with the boat gently rocking
to the caress of the waves
and the shifting balance of unsteady feet.
Stumbling, falling, joking, living.
Then once more,
a pause in the water
when the clear glass of the Red Sea’s surface
reflects upon more than the sky

They live so!
So full!
So well!
So carefree!
