The Fixer-Upper~ Sort of a cape-cod style, built in 1940, standing lonely on the corner with warm hard wood floors and a one-butt kitchen. Original front door mahogany in color with an old brass door-knocker, how I wonder of the many times it spoke, of the hands who grabbed hold and announced their visits, be they friend or foe, casual or serious tidings, I speculate of their intent, of packages left, perhaps a note behind its shiny handle, did those visitors bring happy news, or the most dire.. during those years of war, in the time of the greatest generation. I wonder what tales the yard of weeds and creeping charlie have to tell, of old landscape timbers and bricks that hold secrets of bright petaled flowers gossiping with the neighbors peonies back in 1952. A frayed clothes-line sags from the weight of long ago fresh smelling sheets, I almost see them there as pale white ghosts flapping their corners in a hot July wind, across the way..a forgotten tomato-patch once ripened with the boast of its bounty in red plump delight. A half buried leash left rusted to the fence post, I hope that pup grew to a healthy dog who takes long walks with the wind in his face. So many things left to fade, and die, I'm overwhelmed by echo's of "fix me.. "no, fix me"...as their faint demands swoop down dormers, slide the eaves to the steps of my new beginnings, and I think to myself.. "fix me".. they say home is where the heart is, we'll fix each other, and I grin at the thought of me roasting a turkey in my one-butt kitchen. © Augustsky |

omg this is beautiful, ~Sky. that you can see and feel the past...and that you know there can be reparations made within a person, a restoration of soul if you will, from the house as you in turn bring it back to life again. Made me smile with this. |

sitting in a chair on the front porch of my grandmother's 3-room house, where I spent many of my years, I still feel the pangs, not so different than now, of existence. It wasn't Cape-Cod, but old and venerable and spoke of years. It's wasn't one-butt, but two, or when we squeezed our cheeks together, three or four – it had only a kitchen, in the middle, a bedroom on either side, the bathroom being a 3-foot square, moon-faced, building several yards back, by the chicken house - and the only door opened next to the kitchen table. It's long gone, but like you – I long for the tales it could tell. Much enjoyed this, my friend, and the memories it revived. jimmy |

Great write. There was a lot of phraseology which fell pleasingly on my ear, but... I guess "one butt kitchen" takes the prize. Write on! |
