The Ride

Eyes open—a flutter, is this where it begins?
Sunlight through the shutter says “Darkness never wins.”
The world outside waits as bare feet hit the floor.
But no trust left ‘the Fates, I never reach the door.
A palm placed to the pane won’t help this broken view.
I close my eyes in vain, yet somehow still see you.
Emotions and extremes, doors I’ve mentally closed.
A life spent chasing dreams not quite what I supposed.

Quiet of mind won’t come though silence lies unbending.
It sounds a requiem of pacing never ending.
I listen too closely—dance in the depths availed,
Sing along morosely for all life once entailed.
The price paid too severe, all thought left to dissection.
‘Never see them appear, the wrinkles in reflection.
But thank you for the pain, and betrayal of trust
That makes one pray for rain, for ashes and for dust.

Thank you for the time lost, if time found to perfect
The unshakable cost of finding all suspect.
The dream of a shared fate, the truth of chance denied
Carried like a dead weight, on this soul-sucking ride.
Words disingenuous, a light sprinkling of lies
Gift, be it tenuous, a twinkling to the eyes.
As stars, shadow by cloud, might grant one a quick tease.
But hope spoken aloud just drops them to their knees.

Change on the horizon, wish cast a howler’s moon.
When all you set eyes on yields Thanatos a boon.
‘Won’t join in such wanting, there’s still floor left to tread
In this room I am haunting, reveling 'moments dead.
Soulless, spineless versions that play only in mind,
Framework of recursion for the unwitting blind.
Seconds I can’t have back, I sift unto the winds.
Eyes open to pitched black, is it here the ride ends?

Michael...Not quite sure the phrase she gave you that inspired this wonderful poem but I really enjoyed reading the thoughts in your mind whatever the meaning, as I'm sure she will. To take another's words and thoughts and weave it into a beautiful journey thru your mind is a special gift my friend. Thanks for sharing...Paul

This is absolutely stunning, Michael! You've met the challenge and more! I can feel the emotion in it and see the scene laid out!

My favorite part is of course

"Thank you for the time lost, if time found to perfect
The unshakable cost of finding all suspect.
The dream of a shared fate, the truth of chance denied
Carried like a dead weight, on this soul-sucking ride.
Words disingenuous, a light sprinkling of lies
Gift, be it tenuous, a twinkling to the eyes.
As stars, shadow by cloud, might grant one a quick tease.
But hope spoken aloud just drops them to their knees."

Thank you for humoring me.

"I know this love will tear me to pieces
I know his hands will dig up my secrets"

Glad you enjoyed "the ride” Paul.  Soul-sucking ride was the phrase Jenn challenged me with.  Turned out to be quite a challenge to write the poem and not have it turn into a novel.

Thank you, Jenn.  I appreciate the kick-start here.  Took me down a darker path than I thought it would.

Can always use a phrase for inspiration.  Throw some more at me anytime.
