Sand Creek is but a wisp of brown …across wide Kansas plain, Meandering from field to field, … dissecting flat terrain Occasionally a hidden dell, …will swallow Sand Creek whole And stop her meager springtime flow, …behold a water hole, Then her journey back on course, …through an outlet draw, Flowing gently towards confluence, …with the mighty Kaw Occasionally a cottonwood, …will stand as sentinel, Protecting creatures from the night, …until the come of dawn. Then respite for the feathered flock, ….and shade for newborn fawn, As Sand Creek ever flows below, …her journey nearly done, A final turn to mighty river, … to meet and meld as one. |
