While he is gone one of his chores that will be up to me is to keep a fire going in the wood stove out in the garage. We only need it to burn through the cold nights, but it is quicker to keep it burning all day than to relight it every night. Building the fire is my favorite part. There is kind of a knack to it. Making sure you have the right amount of kindling, the air flow is right, and good wood, takes practice. There is something primal and very maternal to me about building a fire. The crackling of the logs catching on fills me with a unique sense of success. It is almost sacred. You make a pact with the fire to feed it to keep it alive. Therein lies the chore. It is going out in the cold last thing at night and first thing in the morning to feed the stove. You try to stuff it full enough to leave you coals for in the morning or all day. But if the fire should go out for just a little while, all will be well. The garage is snug and holds the heat as does the cast iron stove. And I’ll just have some fun and make another one. That song was funny, I remember it from years ago. Thanks for thinking of me. ~L |
