To live and die, these are the facts, which each of us must face- Survival is the bottom line, when running in life's race. We'll fight and kill, and lie and steal, to seize another breath; Yet all that's waiting down the road: is destiny and Death! Why mothers sacrifice the child; and husbands leave the wife- For one forbidden pleasure now, then suffer all their life- And very friends will turn their backs, on friends who are in need- To gain another foot of track, as down life's rails they speed. What matter Honor? Good? or Right? Mom, Flag, and Apple Pie? When men in highest places: procrastinate and lie? When family life is ancient lore, integrity a joke- You know a politician lied, just by the fact he spoke. To live and die? we all do that- life brief as rising spark- What I would like to leave behind; is some long lasting mark.. That some might say, "I knew him well; his word was good as gold- He stood for truth and justice; in youth, then still, when old." "He never turned away a friend- nor issue did evade- Nor broke a promise; compromised, a stand which he had made Nor harmed a child, betrayed a trust; nor ever bowed his knee- In craven fear of harm, or death; nor sanctioned tyranny." If this be true,. this life be mine? what more can mortal ask- Than be found faithful, till the end; performing every task. My children then can walk with pride; when 'neath the sod I lie- For if a man with honor live, it is no shame to die. |
