I hear that Mike is mighty old, Leastways that’s what I’ve been told. Lived in Kansas his whole life, At age eighteen done got him a wife. Forty-nine plus years later, Mike is still wed, To a beauteous rose, as often he’s said Four children raised, grandkid’s on the knee, And now Mike’s retiring, praise glory be, For twenty one years, the local DA, Then on the bench, what can you say, After twenty long years of judicial decidin’ It’s off towards the sunset, Mike will be ridin’ But yet in his heart, Mike’s a Kansas farm boy, His grimy old pickup, still his favorite toy, And every so often, Mike will get him a yen, And write him a poem, with his trusty old pen, Maybe of cowboys, or possibly a sonnet, Or try him some humor, Mike will do that doggone it. Mike's favorite topic, of course is the rose, Penning of Connie, to his heart disclose, A Kansas farm boy, who’s a poetry geek, Sixty-eight years old, at the end of this week. (and twenty years ago) I am not a cowboy, ...who rides the open range, I am just a farm boy, ...whose dog once had the mange. Ain't got no use for city lights, ...nor use for city's din, I like the plains of Kansas, ...that's where I've always been. I don't wear no pretty boots, ...a' made of ostrich skin, Worn out boots or tennis shoes, ...I'll put my flat feet in. Ain't got no use for French cuisine, ...except for maybe fries, Big city skylines, neon lights, ...no match for Kansas skies. I laugh at high-priced pickups, ...I see them all the time, What's the use to drive a truck, ...not covered with some grime. Tomato beer and salted nuts, ...that'll suit me fine, Boone's Farm with a twist of lime, ...now that's a cultured wine. I got married at eighteen, ...got me a pretty wife, Had four kids and held a job, ...had not too bad a life. I went to school, learned fancy words, ...got me a law degree. And when I get a hankerin', ...I write some poetry. But then I hit the big four eight, ...my job I up and quit, Four kids away in college, ...my wife done had a fit. But things worked out, and we'll make do, ...new job I start next week, Not bad for Kansas farm boy, ...who is a poetry geek. |

Wonderful story of a life being well lived. This makes me smile. The love of a "poetry geek" is some of the best! "How much is real? So much to question |

Love the way this stories wraps around you and pulls you through it. Was only sad it ended so soon. Just a note...I up and quit a most prestigious job at about 40. If the shoe don't fit, the longer you wear it the hard it is on every other aspect of your life. Some doors will only open for us if we walk through the ones we've een lingering in. Michael |
