Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2020-06-20 08:02 AM

Lightning flickered like far away faulty fluorescents.
Thunder in the distance rumbled long and low.
Rain still dripped from the sky like an afterthought,
tapping out its attendance on the grass and cement.
Fireflies appeared under the protection of the porch,
blinking their search lights for each other.
A gentle breath of air smelled sweet with rain’s perfume.
It came like a sigh of relief from the heat,
promising coolness at dawn.
I said goodnight to the porch and the light show
and took myself to bed,
where I drifted off to the rhythm of the rain.

Lori,

Once again you take me right into the rain.  The imagery here is wonderful!

This is my favorite one!

tapping out its attendance on the grass and cement."

It was really delightful that night. If I would have had my lounge chair then I think I would have fallen asleep. ~L

Gonna have me jealous again, Lori.  So dang hot here I can barely breathe.  CA is so overrated!

Michael,
We have had some heat here too. I can't handle it. So the cool was inspirational. Sending you soggy thoughts. ~L

Visceral imagery. Leaves a mark. Nicely done.
