Falling Down

Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Here’s a few words I wanted to put down
about my old man falling down.
He’s a coon hunter you see,
and they’re as crazy as can be.
They tramp through the timber at night
with their special hats with a light,
listening to their hounds carry on
as they find a track and follow it along.
They will chase after them coon all night,
even hours past midnight,
just to see it up a tree.
Mercy, he’s over seventy!
That tripping over branches and his own two feet,
sends him home feeling completely beat.
But love it he does, he always did,
ever since he was just a kid.
I suppose he hit the ground way back when,
it just didn’t hurt as much back then.
His eyes still light up
when he talks about the young pup
and his old girl Easy getting better all the time.
Even though they are both past their prime,
he wants to have one last litter.
Hoping she will throw a real go getter,
he wants to get the breeding right.
I swear it keeps him up at night.
He’s been coon hunting for so long,
for him to quit now would be wrong.
Besides, if he does have a bad slip
and breaks his hip,
He don’t give a flippin’ duck,
he’ll just ride along in the truck.
It must be in his blood that’s plain to see,
because none of that sounds like fun to me.
