Fair to middlin' of nowhere

When the rain turns to snow
and it is dark thirty in the morning
and even doing twenty
on a county road
that’s slicker than
snot on a door knob,
white knuckles are bound to happen.
When you get to the highway
and you are trying to determine
what speed to go in the snow,
and the speedometer hits forty
about the time you see a car in the ditch.
It is easy to decide that is fast enough
because your knuckles can’t get any whiter.
Eventually I noticed in my rearview
lots of impatient headlights
wanting me to go faster.
However they weren’t willing
to pass my white knuckle mobile.
Finally, some big bad semis braved
the slushy mush of the passing lane
and led them all to the promised land
of open highway ahead of me.
I was unfazed.
The needle didn’t move one iota
until I reached the exit ramp.
The same over pass I totaled
my car on a few winters ago.
Knuckle status: White and tight.
My adventure is drawing to a close,
in town traffic is light
with no red lights to impose.
I find my parking place
and pry my knuckles from the wheel.
I heave a big sigh of relief
as the adrenaline escapes my body
and I realize I’m exhausted.
Now all I can think about
is wrapping those knuckles around
a hot cup of coffee.

What a traumatic experience.  I spent about 7 years living in the mountains here in california and I had more than enough of those white knuckle drives for a lifetime.  Easy and "your" own pace...that's the only way to get through it.

Ah Lori I love it when you wax poetic, "snot on a doorknob" it certainly gets the point across.
Made me smile, however, I truly understand those driving conditions living up here in eastern Canada.
You described it well!

Lori...I understand what you are going thru, but being from the South I don't have to deal with Ice & Snow on the roads very often.
Be safe dear lady...Paul
