You know? This life’s a journey- Uphill all the way. Then suddenly, you plunge off of a cliff- In senile introspection, you fall into the trap- Of pondering the past, and play “What if?” What if I’d listened harder, to that well-meant advice? My parents set before me long ago. What if I’d heeded warnings, by well-intentioned friends? About the ways they told me not to go. What if? What if? You wonder- the list goes on and on… Encompassing career, friends, and romance. It seems the Devil’s fiddle, is always out, and tuned- To play the dirge when all the suckers dance. What if I’d looked for true love, and not the pretty smiles- Modeled on the motion picture screen. What if I had been satisfied, to work and stay at home, Instead of always seeking grass that’s green? What if life’s snares and pitfalls, had served to make me wise? So, I’d amend my course and attitude? My outlook would be different, as I reach the end of life- And with a shred of hope, I’d be endued. Not sure if I believe there's green really grass. That's just something they tell us so we will chase dreams. |
