They call it introspection, or maybe reminisce- Those mental trips into the past, that brought a man to this. To contemplate those past mistakes, decisions left unmade- The follies of a wasted youth… the poet’s stock in trade. Is there any profit, in all those mental trips? When thought that seems well-ordered, from present tether slips? To travel back a lifetime, to bask in days of yore.. And sigh, at times, in fond regret, and tend to want for more? To dream of youth’s exuberance, the urge to go and see… If the grass was truly greener? Those decisions made me…Me. The places that I went, and saw; I’d like to see again- Then sit with my grandchildren, and age-worn tales to spin. To take out my old six string, and sing about my life… About the days of punching cows, near starving with my wife. Those years of going down the road, the months away from home, I thought that they had served me well and quenched my urge to roam. There is no fool like an old fool, at least I’ve heard that said- And looking back, I tend to think, that fool lives in my head. So, call it what you wish, friend; I won’t say you are wrong- But all these mental journeys tend to break forth in a song. |

Methinks you did, indeed wish on a star, and look how quickly your inspiration returned, and with a burst of song, no less! Keep writing, John and may mental journeys, dreams and song never end! ![]() |
