A Cold Life

It’s a cold life of indifference
That sets this man apart.
It’s never seen in his dealings,
Fact he once had a heart.
Unconcerned of consequence,
Determined in his gait;
It’s not the time for feelings,
No, things like that must wait.

He’s driven by a purpose,
Though one he can’t attain.
The measure always dire,
The reward always pain.
A lesson proven useless,
This trend that bears repeating:
Sets all ‘round him afire
With emotion’s depleting.

‘Scoffs at ideals generalized,
Believes love to be fable.
He won’t be the one taken!
Not even were he able.
Can’t see through life compromised
The change trust might unfold.
Feeling too damn forsaken
By that he could not hold.

Now, ringlets circling the eyes,
He begins to suspect
Time lost to a shadow dance—
A portrait of regret.
The world, drowning in deep sighs
For love he’s cast away.
His hand emptied of the chance,
Squeezing but air this day.

I wonder will he ever see
His victory—his prize?
This war fought by those like him,
Who never realize
They lose just by its decree.
May as well try still the sun.
If you chase till the light grows dim,
Then love’s already won.

Beautiful poem dealing with sad choices. I like the glimmer of hope for you in the last 2 stanzas.
