The Watch Quiet tonight, so calm—so still, This is my company. A blank stare from the windowsill, For what is there to see? The music: it used to play here, Until the power blew. The echoes, well they seemed sincere, But long ago withdrew. I wonder if the floor would creak, Were I able to stand? I wonder if I chose to speak, Might someone understand? A million thoughts to curse the mind, None offset the unease. I know most would rather go blind Than share in this disease. The cobwebs, so long in forming, Creep slow across the pane. The dark sky of my mind storming, Though it never brings rain. The soul is parched, the mouth dust-filled, As the skin dries and cracks. Small tolls a body unfulfilled So gleefully exacts. I’ll never rise again I know, Nor speak another word Of things Time’s taught me to forego, Hopes held that die unheard. Until the stare itself is lost, On eyes that yet won’t close. Forever taking in the cost Of this, my ill-repose. Michael Anderson |

Soul touching and very sad, Michael. There are those of us out here in the poetry world who understand your words and share some of your situation. |

Michael, this poem reminds me of Robert Service's poetry - the torturous solitude that brings man to his mental knees. Haunting in its eloquence. Well done, Michael! A |

Dang Alison, "the torturous solitude that brings man to his mental knees" is a poem in itself. I honestly have never read any Robert Service poetry, but your representation of him is downright enticing. I will remedy that soon. |
