Fair to middlin' of nowhere

In the shadow
of the big C,
as they sometimes call it,
you live day to day
wondering.
Wondering if it is really gone.
Wondering when things
will feel “normal” again.
Wondering if there will ever be
that feeling of looking forward to again.
Living in the shadow
can last years,
leaving you quite pale
and rather wilted.
Caring for someone suffering
the ravages and recovery
takes a unique toll.
Depression is an undertow
daring to drown you both.
The perils of that long path
don’t just disappear
because your someone
finally sees light
at the end of the tunnel.
The years of defending against
the disease induced ill-tempered nastiness
results in self preserving shutdown.
The turtle having retreated into its shell,
doesn’t stick its neck out
for someone else’s sunshine.
It has its own shadow to deal with.
And you realize then
that they aren’t the only one
still trying to recover.

The big "C" may be diagnosed in one person only, but every one who witnesses it is detrimentally affected.  It hollows out all, indiscriminately.  A cold day here reading this...wish I had something comforting to offer but this topic is a bleeder of anything resembling hope.

Sky,
Thank you so much for reading and commenting. That you referred to it as my work did my heart good. And telling me why you like it was major validation. Can't begin to tell you how much that means to me. Bless your heart. ~L

Remember when my grand mother had it . . . so, so many years ago - passed with it the cause.
Didn't really understand then, I don't think.
And now that I do - - - so far haven't had to deal with it, except through numerous friends, acquaintances, and my heart hurts for all of you.

Not something I want to live . . . but seemingly, or so it seems, maybe inevitable.

Hang in there, my friend - I've crossed everything crossable, for you, your family, and, of course, a daily prayer.

I so understand your thoughts here, Lori. I lost my daughter to cancer and I have dealt with it myself. Tough issue to deal with.
