.

Three judges appear (one carries a folder):
A tarot card reader, embalmer, engraver.
Without much to say and not much of it said
About the boot in the crib and the tire in the bed,
The cane in both hands and the pot on his head
Painted with flowers and chipped on the edge.
And the cat near the door with its back and its tail
Flexed and reflexed in mid air and mid wail.
A dog, turning left and mid indecisions
But seeming to lean toward keeping his vision.
The crow—O the crow! In its cage cawing “Fire!”
O the crow crowing “Mayhem!” and “Murder most foul!”
The crow and the dog and the cat and the tire,
The boot and the crib, the pot painted in flowers:
All in a frame and a sign alongside—
“Self Portrait at Home. Last June or July.”
A ribbon is clipped and then hung for its owner.
Its message is “Mention.” And then the embalmer
Makes a note on a form that he hands the engraver.
The tarot card reader moves on with her hat
While she says to the room, “Ain't no card made for that.”
