An oldie

the piano bar was crowded that night
dark décor, tinkling cocktail glasses
and the piano player
an old man
been down some roads
leathered face and graceful fingers
I had been there before
as had most of the ones sitting around the piano
the man was a legend
an artist
a piano-playing fool
but it was his voice that brought us there
time and time again
and it was one particular song
his finalé for the night
every night
it brought women to tears
and sobs in the throats of the men
what made it so special
what made it so very, very special
was that when he sang the song
he sang it unaccompanied
by his piano
just a simple note
every so often, a quiet, somber note
to emphasize his words
the room began to hush its activity
for the piano man
was going to sing his finalé

Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Hey Jerry,
You painted the picture well, could almost hear the clink of glasses

Lovely poetry, dear Jerry. So "rich and clear".
I always liked Frank Sinatra's rendition from his album, 'Ol Blue Eyes Is Back' was so popular. You must think a lot of that song too.

Thank you.

I always have time for you...

Funny, I must have sat not far from you . . . my deja-vu is so strong.

Way back just after Terry and I married we listened to a guy, together, in a bar/lounge on Tulane Avenue, a few blocks up from Carrollton - and it was to die for - could hear a pin drop during the last song he played. . .

Very much enjoyed, my friend.

Thank you Jimmy. I managed, through my travels to seek out local Piano Bars. And they, one and all, spoke to me. God, I miss that part of my life. Great place to come into contact with unattached females. But really, it was the music that really drew me.
