Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Years ago I was an obnoxious ham.
My niche was to make them laugh.
I always had a wisecrack or joke.
I played the buffoon.
It was a defense.
That kept them from getting too close.
I taught everyone to treat me
like I’m stupid.
Decided I didn’t like that so much
and toned it back a notch or two.
Even more and more as the years went by.
Not that I lost my sense of humor.
They will all tell you I’m crazy.
But sometimes I wonder.
I wonder if all that laughter
I was stirring up was something more
than just a way of hiding.
I’m beginning to think my laughing
was more important than theirs.
It was my way of self medicating
my depression.
I think I need to refill that prescription.

You wasn't wrong at all, Lori. We all go through that period of when we try to appear in ways to make the crowd like us, when in reality we're trying make us like us.

Many introverts behave in overly extroverted ways.
They seldom ask you in.

So you've met my kind before eh? Yes, I'm really painfully shy.

I don't really connect all that well with, "kinds" of people, Miss Lori. In the most general of terms? Yes,
But if "in's" and "ex's are used as bookends, then countless volumes exist in between.
