Dear Annie loosed a fall of sister tears Les? He'd simply slipped way down the years Dressed in a tiny suit that drowned his bones Lost and fragile midst the tea and scones As solemn men of God spoke comfort there A million memories passed into fire And all who loved and mourned bowed low their heads To bleed respect where life and death conspire And then, they put her in a little box Just small enough to carry in the hand Laid her down among the flowers and stone Where elm and ageing churchtower, sombre stand Old Les, his mind now yielded to the grief Mesmerised by synchronised bell clocks Whispered to my welled, throat-vicing tears: 'How did they get Jen in that little box?' |
